Talking to teens about sex

Parents and care-givers play an important role in the teaching of sexuality and relationships to young people.

Most parents and carers know that, just like learning how to play or talk, sexual development is a part of human development and know that it will happen whether we talk to our children or not.

SHFPACT acknowledges that sometimes these conversations can be hard. But we also promote sexuality and relationships education as a lifelong learning experience that cannot simply be learnt through one talk alone, but rather many conversations and experiences.

We see sexuality and relationships education as a lifelong process of acquiring information and forming attitudes, beliefs, and values about identity, relationships and intimacy.  It encompasses:

  • sexual development
  • reproductive health
  • interpersonal relationships
  • communication and consent
  • decision-making and negotiating skills
  • affection and intimacy
  • body image
  • gender roles

To help young people on their journey with to positive and healthy sexuality SHFPACT has a range of resources available or we recommend to parents to support them on this journey.

The SHFPACT bookshop has a range of titles suitable for many ages from young children to pre-teen puberty to young adults – check out the latest bookshop catalogues.

SHFPACT clinic is available for young people with or without parents and care givers to discuss sexual and reproductive health matters.

SHFPACT provides parent information sessions that can be run in schools or for special interest groups.

Parent and care givers with particular concerns or questions are encouraged to contact a SHFPACT educator who can listen and offer referral or resources.
