People with disabilities

Sex & Disability

SHFPACT affirms that individuals with a disability are sexual beings, with the same diversity of sexual feelings, needs, and identities shared by all people in the community.

Sexual Health and Family Planning ACT (SHFPACT) has been providing services for people with disabilities relating to sexuality, relationships, sexual and reproductive health and rights for more than 20 years. Our goal is to support people with disabilities to make informed and positive choices about sexual and reproductive health and wellbeing, and to support those who care for and work with people with disabilities to better facilitate the choices, goals and desires of individuals through information, training and consultancy services.

All people have the fundamental rights to privacy; to love and be loved; develop friendships and emotional relationships; learn about sex, sexual exploitation, sexual abuse, safe sex and other issues regarding sexuality; exercise their rights and responsibilities in regard to privacy and sexual expression and the rights of others; marry and make informed decisions concerning having children; and develop expressions of sexuality reflective of age, social development, cultural values and social responsibility.

SHFPACT encourages a partnership approach which invites all people in that person’s life to be involved and educated, so that new knowledge and skills can be learned and reinforced in the home, school and/ or work environment.
