FPAA Certificate Course in Reproductive & Sexual Health

The Family Planning Alliance Of Australia Certificate Course For Doctors In Reproductive And Sexual Health is a nationally accredited course is designed for medical practitioners who wish to expand their knowledge and increase their skills in the delivery of sexual and reproductive health care.

 6 day Theory Component takes place over 3 weekends.

  • 4-5 June 2022 &, 26-26 June 2022 & 28-29 July 2022

It is suitable for:

  • GPs and GP registrars, 
  • O&G registrars, 
  • Sexual Health Physician Trainees 
  • Medical practitioners who hold the Family Planning Certificate in Sexual and Reproductive Health from past years and wish to update their knowledge in view of recent rapid and exciting changes in this area of medicine.

The full FPAA Certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health for Doctors is awarded to medical practitioners who complete Theory + Assessment + Clinical Attachment. 

PARTICIPANT ELIGIBILITY:

Registered Medical Practitioner with MBBS or equivalent AND at least 1year clinical experience after internship, which must include Women’s Health experience in general practice or in hospital gynaecology outpatients.

If you choose to undertake the Supervised Clinical Attachment:

  • You must have current medical registration with AHPRA and current medical indemnity insurance.
  • You must already have experience in gynaecological examination, bimanually and with a speculum, in general practice or during an O&G term in hospital. The clinical attachment is not suitable for practitioners who have not yet acquired these skills.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. Demonstrate strategies to enable a non-judgemental approach to reproductive and sexual health practice
  2. Assess and manage common and important reproductive and sexual problems in primary care andrology
  3. Assess and manage common and important reproductive and sexual problems in primary care gynaecology
  4. Compare the mechanisms of action, efficacy, side effects, contraindications, risks, advantages and disadvantages of all forms of available contraception
  5. Integrate use of Australian Guidelines for STI testing and management into a variety of clinical case scenarios.

COURSE COMPONENTS:

1. Theory and Assessment:

    The 6 day Theory Component takes place over 3 weekends.

  • Participants must attend all 6 days
  • Content consists of oral and visual presentations, demonstrations, simulations and Case studies during which participants are encouraged to be actively involved.
  • An optional Contraceptive Implant Training Workshop is included at the end of Day 1
  • Assessment is done via Role Play exam, and a take-home written exam which must be completed within 2 weeks of the completion of the course.
  • This Theory/Assessment Component can be done as a stand-alone medical education activity if you do not wish to complete the full FPAA Certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health for Doctors.

All 6 Days must be completed to gain RACGP/ACRRM points, and to be able to progress to the Supervised Clinical Attachment.

2. Supervised Clinical Attachment

Participants must complete the Theory and Assessment Components to progress to the Clinical Attachment.  You must already have experience in gynaecological examination, bimanually and with speculum, in general practice or during an O&G term in hospital. This clinical attachment is not suitable for practitioners who have not yet acquired these skills.

  • The Clinical Attachment consists of 7 sessions of supervised clinical training to be completed over 4 consecutive days Tuesday to Friday
  • The first session can be one where the participant observes the consultations.
  • In subsequent sessions the participant conducts the consultation while the supervising doctor observes and contributes where appropriate.
  • Specific Competencies are to be demonstrated, and are recorded in a portfolio
  • Role Plays and Case Studies may be included to complete competencies.
  • The Clinical Attachment must be completed within 2 years of the Theory and Assessment Component
  • It is possible to do the Clinical Attachment in another state, but fee arrangement would have to be made separately by the participant with that state.

The clinical attachment is optional and paid for when placements are arranged. Dates are by individual arrangement after completion of theory and assessment.

Changes may be made to course dates and mode of delivery at late notice if COVID-19 restrictions escalate. While SHFPACT will endeavour to avoid any unnecessary changes, this may be unavoidable. Every effort will be made to reschedule the course, and any affected placements or assessment, to ensure that course participants are able to complete the course in a reasonable timeframe.
